Frequently asked questions
Swoosh Basketball Canada (often operating as Swoosh Canada Basketball) is a prominent youth basketball organization based out of Edmonton, Alberta. Known as a leader in organizing high-energy, professionally run competitive basketball events, Swoosh provides elite club programs, specialized training academies, out-of-town clinics, and a massive series of tournaments—like the Swoosh Metro Series, Delta South Classic, and Swoosh Christmas JAM.
The program focuses on youth development from the U11 to U18 divisions for both boys and girls. Swoosh is designed to give athletes a "pro-experience," featuring structured scheduling, championship awards, and global exposure by live-streaming tournament games on BallerTV and connecting players with university and college scouts across North America.
Swoosh Basketball tournaments are designed to look and feel like professional showcases while providing a structured, highly organized environment for competing clubs.
Game Format: Most tournaments guarantee teams a minimum of 4 games. Games are played using FIBA (High School) rules with specific Swoosh modifications, featuring four 9-minute stop-time quarters (or two 16-minute halves, depending on the specific tournament series) to ensure fast-paced action.
Divisions & Brackets: Competitions are strictly organized by age/grade divisions (U11 up to U18 for both boys and girls). To maintain fairness, teams are placed into competitive tiers (such as Gold, Silver, and Bronze) within their age bracket.
Pool Play & Seeding: Tournaments begin with pool play, where a team’s win-loss record determines their tournament seeding. If teams are tied at the end of pool play, seeding is determined by head-to-head records, followed by a point-differential system (up to a +/- maximum per game).
Technology & Media: Schedules, brackets, and live standings are managed entirely online (via digital tournament apps), meaning no paper brackets are kept at the gyms. Additionally, games are fully live-streamed, giving family, friends, and scouts the ability to watch from anywhere.
Professional Officiating: All tournament games are strictly refereed by certified, carded officials to ensure a disciplined, safe, and elite level of play.
It depends on the size and schedule of the specific tournament. Swoosh Basketball makes an effort to centralize games as much as possible at massive multi-court hubs like the Saville Community Sports Centre or Legacy Athletics in Edmonton. For smaller or mid-sized events, your team will likely play all of their guaranteed games under one roof, meaning no mid-day traveling between venues.
However, because Swoosh hosts some of the largest tournaments in Western Canada—often welcoming hundreds of teams across multiple age groups—they collaborate with over 30 partner gyms and school venues across the city to accommodate the sheer volume of games. For these massive flagship events, games within a specific division/tier are usually grouped at a single location for the day, but teams should be prepared for the possibility of playing at a different gym if they advance to cross-over playoff brackets or championship rounds.
All venue locations and court assignments are locked into the online digital tournament schedule ahead of time so families can plan their travel and accommodations accordingly.
Yes. Swoosh Canada Basketball is a youth development organization, and its tournaments and leagues are structured strictly for players from U11 up to U18 divisions (covering both boys and girls).
To ensure fair competition, Swoosh follows strict age and division guidelines:
Age Divisions: Teams generally register under U11, U13, U15, U16, U17, or U18 brackets based on birth year.
Playing "Up" vs. Playing "Down": Players are allowed to play up in an older division if their skill level allows it, but players are strictly prohibited from playing down in a younger division.
U18 Rosters: The U18 division typically operates under US tournament rules. If a player is 18 on January 1st of the competition year, they are considered 18 for the entire year. High school seniors with remaining school eligibility or unsigned prep school players are usually permitted to play, but players who have already graduated and are over the age limit are not allowed.
Roster Restrictions: A player cannot play on two different teams within the exact same age division during a single tournament.
Note for Coaches: Coaches must keep proof of age and grade (such as student IDs, report cards, or birth certificates) on hand. Swoosh reserves the right to conduct random roster checks to verify player eligibility, and age challenges can be officially requested by opposing teams.
Absolutely! Swoosh Basketball tournaments are designed to be high-energy, family-friendly events, and spectators are highly encouraged to come out and cheer on the athletes.
Here is what you need to know if you are planning to attend:
Admission/Gate Fees: There is a standard gate fee for spectators to enter tournament venues. Rates typically range between $8 to $10 for a single-day pass or $15 for a full weekend wristband. (Discounts are often available for students and seniors, while young children under 10 are usually free).
Code of Conduct: Swoosh strictly enforces a positive environment. Because these tournaments are for the development and enjoyment of the youth athletes, unsportsmanlike behavior, or the verbal harassment of referees, coaches, or players by parents and fans will result in immediate ejection from the facility without a refund.
Can't Make it in Person? If family and friends cannot travel to the tournament, they don't have to miss out. Swoosh partners with BallerTV to live-stream all tournament games online, allowing fans to tune in from anywhere in the world.
